Why Gardening is Good for You

The first and the oldest business on earth is farming and this was ordained by God. Farming is one of the first businesses that was given to man when the earth was created and many of the people then prospered doing farming. There was no home without a farm then because it was probably their only source of livelihood.

In the early centuries, there was hardly any family that did not engage in farming. This was one of the reasons that affected the acceptance of Western education when the Europeans came into the country. Many children then were not sent to school because they had to help their fathers in the farm. so, the opinion of parents then was that their business would suffer if they had to send the children to school.

The result was that farm products were in abundance and, therefore, very cheap too.  But over the years farming activities have dwindled and this has affected the people negatively. So many factors are responsible for this but the main issue here is our neglect of the first business given to man by the Almighty. Every youth now wants to do white collar jobs that are virtually not available. This mindset has also affected the family and so little or no attention is given to farming. Unfortunately, that is also partly because it is seen as a status symbol for the youth to ascribe poverty and illiteracy to farming.

That is despite the fact that farming has become a lot easier and scientific these days. People now practice farming in their compound, and without being subjected to the blazing sun or having one’s hands dirtied while tendering to the farm.  Farming  such as the types listed below can be practiced in our various homes to help alleviate challenges of food security in the society:

  1. YAM FARMING

  2. CUCUMBER FARMING

  3. PEPPER & TOMATO FARMING

  4. ONION FARMING

  5. CARROT FARMING

  6. GARDEN EGG FARMING

  7. MAIZE FARMING

  8. CASSAVA FARMING

  9. BEANS FARMING

  10. COCO-YAM FARMING

  11. VEGETABLE FARMING

  12. PAWPAW FARMING

  13. PLANTAIN/BANANA FARMING

These businesses do not require much money. In fact one can start with little or no cash. Doing this will require some basic skills in farming, and in a gradual process. It also provides an opportunity for a person to do some basic exercise especially for an older person. It affects such a person’s purse positively because such farm produce is consumed by the family. What that means is that when there is paucity of funds, the farmer who has a vegetable farm, for example, does not have to think about how to raise money to go and buy vegetables in the market. All he needs to do is stroll into the garden and return to give the family a fresh vegetable soup. That is why you find that, a lot of times, some families don’t buy vegetables from the market.

Another beauty of domestic gardening is that you can be doing other businesses with it, once you plant it starts to grow by itself, all you need to do is to weed it as and when due.
