WHEN SHOUTS OF HUNGER BECOME POLITICAL WEAPONS

When the Bola Ahmed Tinubu came in as the president of the  country on May 29, 2023, nearly every citizen thought everything would change over night. Judging from the history of his performance, as governor in Lagos for eight years, to  his campaign slogan of Re- Newed Hope Agenda, people believed, either wrongly or otherwise, that the Messiah they has been waiting for has come.
Immediately after he took the oath of office, he announced the removal of fuel subsidy and later floated the national currency, the NAIRA.
It was generally agreed that those actions were necessary, in order to reshape the country economically. However, the cost of living skyrocketed and prices of other materials and services went overboard.
Then, the new slogan, ‘E bi npa wa o’  (We are hungry) took the airwaves.  There were pockets of protests, as a majority of people hold the government responsible for the frustrating high prices of goods, including food items, on the government.
What the people did not avert their minds to is that a lot of market women and men who were supposed to be their brother’s keepers, turned to shylocks. And in the absence of a board for  price control, the cost of goods and services went overboard. Naturally, the people started accusing Tinubu and his Government of bringing hardship.
Now, inflation has gone down drastically, and prices of food stuffs and other services have gone down too.
But, then, our brothers and Sisters who were shouting “E bi npa wa o” ,are no longer shouting,
It would have been better for them to come out and tell the whole world that things are getting better.
It would have been better for them to come out and tell the whole world that things are getting better.
May be they have forgotten, but , government performance will bring the reality of the moment to their door steps
