EXPERT DESCRIBES FONIO, A GRAIN VARIANT, AS A HIGHLY NUTRITIOUS FOOD 

Nigerians have been urged to embrace Fonio as an alternate diet to local grains in a bid to promote healthier living. Fonio is an ancient grain considered as a nutrient-dense superfood that offers a viable alternative to traditional grains. It addresses common health issues such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and gluten sensitivity.

“Fonio holds immense potential for Nigeria’s economy. As a resilient and highly nutritious crop, it can enhance food security, create sustainable agricultural jobs, and stimulate rural development. By investing in Fonio, we not only diversify our agricultural sector but also empower local communities and contribute to a more resilient and inclusive economy,” Cobi Jane Akinrele, founder, Aké Collective, said in a statement.

She disclosed that Aké Collective donated 1200 sample bags of Fonio, accounting for 600 bags of Fonio grains and 600 bags of Fonio flour to Nigerians to boost public acceptance of the grain as an alternate diet option in Nigeria.

According to Akinrele, Aké Collective donated Fonio on its platform online as part of its recently launched awareness campaign aimed at promoting healthier living and combats the rising prevalence of chronic diseases in Nigeria.

She stated that the awareness campaign was launched to highlight the numerous health benefits of Fonio and its potential to transform the way Nigerians eat. She disclosed that the essence of the campaign was to educate Nigerians about the grain’s nutritional value and its ability to reduce the risk of chronic diseases. She stated further that by incorporating Fonio into their diets, Nigerians can reduce their risk and improve their overall health.

“Its unique nutritional profile boasts several health benefits, including high fibre content that helps regulate blood sugar levels and promote digestive health. Additionally, Fonio is rich in protein, providing sustained energy and making it an excellent source of energy,” Akinrele stated.

According to her, Fonio’s gluten-free nature makes it an ideal option for individuals with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease. “It is rich in essential minerals such as iron, magnesium, and potassium making it an excellent choice for those seeking a healthier lifestyle.
