YOBE GOVERNMENT COMMISSIONS RESEARCH TO UNRAVEL CAUSE OF KIDNEY DISEASE IN ONE OF ITS LOVAL GOVERNMENT AREAS

The Yobe State government, in collaboration with experts from the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC), has embarked on a research project to determine the root cause of kidney disease affecting residents in Bade local government area.

As part of the research, the team collected various samples, including soil, water, vegetables, and fish, from Gashu’a farmlands. Dr. Mahmoud Bukar Maina, Special Adviser on Science, Research and Innovation, and Director of BioRTC, led the team.

Dr. Maina explained, “As part of the research, the Environment Team will collect sand, water, vegetables and other perishable foods produced in Gashua as part of the effort to find out the root causes of kidney disease in Bade.”

The research aims to analyze the collected samples to identify potential links between environmental factors and kidney disease. Dr. Usman Bawa, Co-lead of the Environment Team, noted, “After the field work, we will be able to apply high level statistical analysis to uncover the relationship between the level of heavy metals or contaminants in these samples and kidney disease risk using scientifically established methods.”

The Yobe State government has expressed commitment to finding a lasting solution to the kidney disease menace. Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana, visited the research site and reiterated the government’s determination to develop an implementation plan based on the research findings.

Dr. Gana stated, “We are doing all we could to restore the well-being of the people.” He commended Governor Mai Mala Buni for prioritising the health sector in the state.
