Nigeria is set to benefit from a significant agricultural intervention package worth $183 million. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Federal Government of Nigeria, aims to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and rural entrepreneurs in nine northern states.
The program will directly benefit approximately 456,000 smallholder farmers and rural entrepreneurs, with a focus on promoting sustainable agricultural development and enhancing nutrition. “The project is expected to directly benefit an estimated 456,000 smallholder farmers and rural entrepreneurs, with 40 per cent women, 10 per cent persons with disabilities, and 5 per cent Internally Displaced Persons returnees,” said Dr. Isaac Mensah, an IFAD official.
The initiative will also indirectly support around 3.1 million Nigerians, contributing to a reduction in poverty, improved nutrition, and enhanced resilience in these communities. The program’s implementation is expected to commence in August 2025 and will span eight years.
