As part of efforts to encourage Nigerian farmers to engage in massive food production, the Zamfara State government made known its intention to give support to farmers in the state. Towards this end farmers in the state have got the assurance that they will receive support in the area of farm inputs from the state government.
The assurance was given by Governor Dauda Lawal at the launch of the intervention programme at the premises of the state ministry of agriculture. This was stated in the release by Suleiman Idris, the special adviser, media and publicity to the governor. He quoted the governor saying that his administration would provide agricultural inputs to 19,000 farmers. The benefiting farmers are those under FADAMA 111 project. The inputs include 700 power tillers and seeds for rice and maize. The support is expected to enhance the production of the food items.
Governor Lawal’s step is coming at a time his brother governors in Oyo, Kaduna and Niger, among others, are in the forefront of efforts at solving the crisis of food in the country.
The Zamfara governor will not stop at the distribution of farm inputs. In order to ensure that the farmers would not have problems getting their products to the consumers. He said, “my administration plans to construct 70 kilometres of feeder roads and build 40 new markets which will comprise 4,000 shops.” That means that farmers in
Zamfara would have some added value.
