If you are the type who indulges in eating between meals, and your favourite is that snack you can readily grab on the road, you must watch what you eat from now on. This is because there are suspicions that some of the people who sell snacks, particularly along the road, most especially in traffic, are more interested in the profit they would make than your health. The tendency, therefore, is for them to, propelled by their profiteering instincts, raise the quantity rather than the quality of what is sold to you, so they can make more money. That is why the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, LASCOPA, has decided to alert the populace to be mindful of what they consume. The agency has warned that there are some poisonous plantain chips in the market. The agency is concerned that the condition under which some of the entrepreneurs produce plantain chips leaves much to be desired. It has, therefore, advised consumers to watch the kind of chips they buy for consumption. The warning was sequel to an alarm raised by some concerned individuals on the social media about certain sharp practices engaged in by yet unknown persons said to be marketing the plantain chips for public consumption. The social media user had indicated that the culprit was seen melting polythene in the hot oil before putting the plantain in the frying pan. The social media user claimed that the plantain chips maker said the polythene strengthens the chips, making it better for munching. Though LASCOPA said it had not confirmed the claim, as it was still investigating it, it felt obliged to alert consumers first before it was too late. It also encouraged the people to report any suspicious act capable of jeopardising the health of the people to its office, so that eventual damage could be prevented. If you are wondering how to get in touch with them, the agency gave its addresses: “LASOPA is located at No. 2B, Soji Adepegba Close, off Allen Avenue, Ikeja; with annex offices situated within Badagry Local Government Secretariat, Bariga LCDA, Ikorodu Local Government and Ikoyi/Obalende LCDA.”
