SOUTHEAST SOCIOCULTURAL GROUP PREACHES CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURE

A sociocultural group in southeastern part of Nigeria, the Igbo Ekene Global Development Union, IEGDU has taken a bold step to sensitise Nigerians on the importance of climate-smart agriculture and sustainable agricultural practices in the country.

The Union demonstrated this during its celebration of the 2024 National Indoor plant week. At the event, the President General of the group, Moses Onyegbule highlighted the merits of plants to the greenery and aesthetics of any space. He listed some of the benefits of indoor plants to include improved air quality, positive outlook, the boost to productivity and reduction of stress levels.

While admitting that the Igbos from the south east have great respect for their environment, he advised that communities in their interaction with the natural environment should refrain from abusing the green population order to sustain them for future generations.

He urged Nigerians to establish home gardens, the practice which he also said would reduce the problem of food shortages and hunger particularly in the present economic challenges ravaging the society. He advised state governments to intensify efforts towards ensuring a greener, healthier and sustainable environment. He added that this gesture should be supported by individuals, communities and organizations through the encouragement of the public on the need to embrace the concept of National Indoor Plant.

Started in 2007 by plant expert Mark Martin, the inspiration behind this event is the founder’s belief that indoor plants are vital for a healthy lifestyle and for connecting with nature.

For more than 15 years, plant enthusiasts have been gathering during this week, whether in person or virtually, to promote the well-being that plants can offer to people of all ages.
