SENATOR UMEH PREACHES COMMITMENT TO AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES FOR FOOD SECURITY AT NEW YAM FESTIVAL 

The Senator Representing Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, Senator (Dr.) Victor Umeh called on his constituents to embrace agriculture as a way of ensuring that they have food on their tables. Senator Umeh made the call in his Aguluzigbo country home, during the 2024 New Yam Festival. He said: “I want to use this occasion of 2024 New Yam Festival to call on my constituents, particularly the youth, to see agriculture as the way to go. Going back to the farm is the only way to fight the food insecurity facing the nation as of today.”

The federal Lawmaker highlighted his efforts to support farmers in his constituency. He pointed out that on the 26th of July 2024, he distributed over 1000 bags of 50kg fertiliser made available by the Federal Government to the President Generals of all the 58 towns in Anambra Central, which were shared to the farmers to boost their yields.

He added that the focus of the New Yam Festival should be beyond dancing and celebrations , but it’s also to encourage people to make a positive diversion and embrace agriculture to promote Igbo cultural heritage as well as improve food production so as to eradicate hunger.

Highlights of the event were cutting and eating of the roasted yam by the traditional ruler of Aguluzigbo – His Royal Majesty, Igwe Rufus Iloduba the Eze Ohanyere 11 of Aguluzigbo.
