POLICE IN OGUN STATE DIGS INTO ATTACK BY HERDSMEN ON HECTARES OF RICE FARM

The Ogun State police command has commenced investigation into the reported attack on a five-hectare rice farm in the state. The rice plantation, said to be owned by one Julius Okegbenro of  Favour CDA, Imala Elega in the state was invaded by a group of unidentified herdsmen. The incident occurred in Ilupeju Ibaro Village, Abeokuta, and was reported to the Ilupeju Division of the police command.

According to police spokesperson Omolola Odutola, the herdsmen fled the scene after realising they were being observed, leaving one of their cows behind. “A security guard employed on the farm documented the incident via video recording as evidence,” Odutola said. The attack has raised concerns about the possible conflict between farmers and herders in the region.

The police have launched an investigation into the matter, with the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, directing the Divisional Police Officer, DPO to convene an emergency meeting with relevant stakeholders. The meeting aims to prevent further escalation and promote understanding between the parties involved. As Odutola noted, the police are working to foster a peaceful resolution to the conflict. That was not the first time that the police command would troubleshoot on similar matters.

In a separate incident, farmers and herders in the Mowe community have resolved a dispute over the killing of six cows. The police intervened, arresting the prime suspect and mediating a resolution between the parties. As part of the agreement, the villagers agreed to allocate designated grazing areas to the herders.

The Commissioner of Police reassured residents that the command is committed to ensuring peace and safety for all citizens, and will continue to engage all parties involved to foster understanding and prevent conflicts
