In the latest move to foster peace and solve the lingering crisis between farmers and herders in Adamawa State, a non-governmental organization, Search for Common Ground (SFCG) in its end of the peace project in the state has handed over the peace structures it created to the government at both the state and local council levels. The NGO, therefore, encouraged the relevant authorities to take ownership of the peace structures created over the months for continued peace building.
During the project close-out ceremony in Yola, the Country Director of SFCG, Fatima Abubakar Madaki, stated that the COMITAS Project has been successful in addressing the issues of competition for resources that often cause friction between farmers and herders. “Your Excellency, we hope that the structures we are handing over will be maintained,” she told Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who was represented on the occasion by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Amos Edgar.
SFCG has been implementing Phase 2 of the peace project since January 2024, titled Contributing to the Mitigation of Conflicts over Natural Resources between Farmers and Herder Communities in Adamawa and Taraba States (COMITAS II). The structures are the Adamawa Forum for Farmer-Herder Relations (AFFAHR), Peace Architecture Dialogue (PAD), Community Security Architecture Dialogue (CSAD), Community Response Network (CRN), Common Ground Journalists Network, and Media Fellows.
