Kano State is witnessing a revolution in agriculture. Aside from the investment in livestock, where feeds are grown and herders made to herd their cattle within a forest reserve, the government of Abba Yusuf is encouraging investment in storage and agro-allied establishments in the state. One major step is the commissioning recently by the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, John Owan, of a ₦10 billion onion processing plant in the state. The plant is owned an by Indian firm, Prism Foods Limited. This great step will reduce post-harvest losses and provide storage solutions for onions and other perishable goods.
The minister assured foreign investors of a favorable environment under the administration of President Bola Tinubu. In his address, the Kano State governor proposed the establishment of a National Onion Council to regulate quality and promote Nigeria’s global onion market position.
The plant’s establishment is expected to benefit onion farmers and strengthen the value chain.
