The Enugu State Government has earmarked ₦2 billion for the development of farm estates across the state’s 260 wards in 2025. Dr. Patrick Ubru, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization, made the announcement in Enugu. He explained that the initiative, driven by Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, is designed to make each ward self-sufficient in food production, thereby promoting food security throughout the state.
Under the plan, residents will be trained in modern farming techniques, including the use of high-yield seeds and efficient land management practices. The “One Political Ward, One Farm Estate Initiative” will establish farm estates in each ward, focusing on diverse agricultural activities such as crop farming, animal husbandry, poultry, horticulture, and fish farming.
Ubru highlighted that the project would be implemented in collaboration with local government councils to ensure its success, with particular emphasis on engaging local youth. He encouraged young people to take ownership of the initiative, which promises significant benefits for the community.
The commissioner also noted that the farm estates would help tackle several challenges, including food insecurity and conflicts between farmers and herders, with secure fencing surrounding the estates. Moreover, the program is expected to generate job opportunities, particularly for the youth, by increasing agricultural productivity.
To ensure the effective operation of the farm estates, the state government plans to work closely with local government chairmen to provide 24-hour security and monitoring.
