Determined to fight food insecurity in his constituency as well as empower the youths for self-sustenance, the member representing Isiala Ngwa North/South of Abia State in the National Assembly, Ginger Onwusibe, has enlisted the assistance of the Agribusiness Incubation Centre, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike for the realisation of that goal.
The lawmaker disclosed this at his country home when he received the Director of Agribusiness Incubation Centre, MOUAU, Dr. Philips Nto who paid him a working visit to acquaint him with the operations of the Centre.
The federal lawmaker expressed joy that the mission of the Centre tallied with his vision of ending hunger and deprivation through agriculture and Agribusiness. He said youths in particular needed to be taught the rudiments of farming not only to sustain themselves but make commercial capital of it.
Onwusibe, said the establishment of the Agribusiness Incubation Centre at MOUAU was an answered prayer to the yearnings of his people who are seeking knowledge of modern ways of farming to earn a living. According to him, after being briefed on the nature of the services of the Centre, he would mobilize his constituents, ward by ward to receive the necessary training.
He commended the Vice Chancellor of MOUAU, Prof. Maduebibisi Iwe for initiating the programme, which he noted would be of great assistance to Abia citizens. The lawmaker also commended the Director, Dr. Philips Nto, for carrying the gospel of the Centre to the grassroots through his interactions with the representatives of the people.
Onwusibe, expressed gratitude to the Centre for the visit and commended both the University and the Centre for their efforts aimed at eradicating poverty through improved farming methods and utilising the value chain in the Agricultural sector.
Earlier, Dr. Philips Nto had informed the lawmaker that he could leverage on the various packages offered by the Centre to improve the lives of his constituents. According to him, owing to lack of information and adequate training, many Nigerian farmers are unable to maximize yields and therefore discouraged from engaging in small and large scale farming.
