Sunday March 17 was an unusually busy day in Lagos State. Many people trooped out to designated markets where the Lagos State government assembled vendors to sell food items at discounted prices. The centres spread across 57 locations in five divisions in the state had people fill the spaces from about an hour ahead of the scheduled starting time of the exercise at 11:00 am However, though people were happy about the price of the commodities, they complained about the arrangement, which made some of them leave in frustration. In some centres officials with the vouchers did not arrive on time.
To start with, in some of the centres the exercise did not start on time because of the delay in the provision of and when it eventually took off. At the centres, the government posted lists containing food items and their prices, perhaps to guide against sharp practices.
Generally, however, it was well commended by residents, some of whom felt that the experience might be the usual teething problems associated with exercises that had to do with crowd management. Some of the residents also complained that most vendors had one POS terminal per shop which made the exercise so slow that the queue became so long to control.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had announced the initiative last month, as part of plans to ease the current hardship in the country. The exercise will be held on Sundays.
