Residents of some states in the federation have been warned to watch out for heavy rain and exercise caution from moving around during the rains and after retirement. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued the warning, suggesting that would be an anticipated moderate to heavy rainfall over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Benue, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Abia, and Imo states. This forecast includes potential flash floods due to the expected heavy downpours, and strong winds that may accompany the rains. Though it did not indicate that Ogun State would be one of them, the southwest state experienced heavy downpour beginning from Tuesday June 25.
The warning was included in NiMet’s forecast bulletin published on Tuesday. The agency also predicted light to moderate rainfall over three days in Kaduna, Niger, Abuja, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Ekiti, and Lagos states. Very light or no rain is expected in other parts of the country.
NiMet advised the public to avoid driving through surface runoff waters due to strong undercurrents. Other potential hazards include slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility during rainfall, which can disrupt road traffic. The report also said strong winds pose a threat to weak structures, trees, and masts.
The agency recommended disconnecting electrical appliances before the rains start, rather than during the rain. It said that “No hydrometeorological hazards are anticipated elsewhere. The public is advised to watch out for updates.”
