The International Fund for Agricultural Development, IFAD, has commenced a training for farmers in Nigeria to turn rice husks to mushroom. The maiden programme was held in Niger state. The programme titled ‘Conversion of Waste to Wealth,’ an innovation that uses rice husks and straws as substrates for mushroom production in Bida, Niger state, rice farmers in the area have been advised to embrace this technology initiative to boost their economic and nutritional condition.
State IFAD Coordinator, Hajiya Hadizat Isah, disclosed that Niger state was the first to adopt this initiative under the IFAD programme in the country. According to her, “We observed that we have a lot of rice husks and straws in Niger State, and instead of burning them, we decided to train farmers in mushroom cultivation. This programme is not only about wealth creation but also about promoting healthy food options.”
One of the farmers, Priscilla Ibrahim, expressed excitement on the financial and nutritional value of the mushroom through the rice husk programme. She said, “The training on mushroom production has been an eye-opener for me. I’ve learned that I can improve my financial status by converting waste into wealth. I am eager to start my own mushroom farm and share my knowledge with others.
“Mushrooms are a healthy food option, packed with minerals and vitamins. I am grateful for the knowledge and skills I have acquired through this programme and committed to putting them into practice.”
