The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf on Monday urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider reopening the country’s borders for importation of foodstuffs as an immediate measure to alleviate food scarcity, especially during Ramadan.
Yusuf’s appeal was made through the Controller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi who visited the governor over the initiative of the Service to distribute food items to Kano residents, at the Government House in Kano.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the governor lauded the initiative as a step in the right direction at a time when most households were affected by hardship and hunger. He said, “We wish to appreciate the President’s intervention in the ongoing national food initiative which he considers Kano as the host for the initiative to be launched believing that the programme will cushion the effects of food scarcity if implemented.”
Subsequently, Yusuf assured the Service of his support for an exercise that would benefit Kano and Nigeria.
Reiterating the importance of strengthening the bond between the Nigerian Customs Service and the Kano community, Adeniyi assured the NCS’s commitment to refining business processes and fostering stakeholder collaboration.
Recall that the NCS in Lagos State disbursed seized food items including over 20,000 bags of assorted grains such as rice, beans, maize, guinea corn, millet and soya beans to alleviate food scarcity in the country.
