GOVERNMENT ENTICES YOUTH TO GIVE THE WAR AGAINST FOOD INSECURITY A BOOST

In a bid to revitalise Nigeria’s agricultural sector, the National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) has kicked off the 2025 Boot Camp for Youths on Plant Variety Protection. This innovative program is designed to equip young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills necessary to drive meaningful change in the agricultural sector.

The program, which began in Abuja, brought together 25 selected participants from across the country. They will learn about the principles, key concepts, and practical application of plant variety protection based on the UPOV PVP system.

Ishiak Othman Khalid, acting director general of NASC, emphasised the importance of plant variety protection, stating that Nigeria is committed to developing and enhancing its agricultural sector. “This initiative is part of Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on petroleum production,” he added.

Esther Ibrahim, representing the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, noted that Nigeria’s current agricultural population is ageing, and there is an urgent need for innovation and fresh perspectives. “The journey to transform Nigeria’s food systems is far from over… With the support of international bodies and partners like the National Seed Council, Nigeria is poised to make significant strides in transforming its food systems,” she said.

She urged participants to work together to drive meaningful change and contribute to Nigeria’s food security and prosperity.
