FUTA TO TRAIN FARMERS ON THE CULTIVATION OF HIGH YIELD GREEN HOUSE BELL PEPPER

The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) announced its readiness to train farmers in vegetable production, focusing on the F1 species of bell pepper.

Professor Ayo Olalusi, the team lead for vegetable production in the university, explained that the process involves planting and nurturing this hybrid variety, which offers several advantages over traditional types.

During a visit to the University’s Greenhouse Research Farm, Olalusi described the F1 bell pepper as an early-ripening variety that doesn’t require staking and is resistant to diseases.

He said, “The advantageous features include a high level of resistance to diseases, vigorous and strong plant, sweet flavor, and the fruit size is about 10-11 cm width by 11-12 cm length, while it weighs between 250-280g.”

Olalusi emphasised that FUTA is committed to guiding farmers and individuals in greenhouse cultivation, whether on a small or large scale, and the university will continue growing the peppers for local supply.

He also expressed openness to partnerships for large-scale production that could generate revenue for FUTA and partners.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university , Professor Adenike Oladiji praised the greenhouse project and expressed her vision for its growth. She emphasised the importance of training individuals in cultivating bell peppers, F1 tomatoes, and other crops to help address food security issues.

Oladiji also announced plans to expand the greenhouse facilities with the help of university engineers, technologists, and fabricators.
