The Federal Government’s efforts to revamp the agricultural sector have received a significant boost with the arrival of 255 tractors, the first installment of a 2,000-tractor procurement deal. This development is expected to enhance food production, reduce reliance on foreign currency, and alleviate the nation’s rising food inflation, currently at 34 percent.
According to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, the tractor initiative is a crucial component of the government’s broader strategy to transform the agricultural sector. “These tractors are not just machines, they are a symbol of our commitment to empowering our farmers and ensuring food security for our nation,” he said.
The tractors will be complemented by essential farming equipment, including ploughs, harrows, seeders, and boom sprayers, to facilitate efficient farming practices. Additionally, 1,200 trailers will be provided to farmers, while 9,000 sets of spare parts will be made available for maintenance purposes.
Kyari emphasised the importance of maintaining the tractors and other equipment, stating, “We also have 12 service vehicles, which will function as mobile workshops, carrying all the necessary tools. These will be deployed to the areas where the tractors will be used.” He added, “These vehicles will allow for on-the-spot repairs and ensure the machinery remains in perfect working condition.”
The government’s tractor initiative is part of a comprehensive plan to boost agricultural production, reduce poverty, and enhance food security. As Kyari noted, “We are committed to ensuring that our farmers have access to the tools and resources they need to succeed. This is just the beginning of our efforts to transform the agricultural sector and ensure a food-secure future for our nation.”
