The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has
warned traders, and farmers to desist from the forceful practices of ripening
fruits, adulterating palm oil, and sale of contaminated meat and grains.
During a sensitisation campaign in Abuja, the Acting Executive Vice Chairman of
FCCPC, Dr Adamu AbdullahI on Thursday decried the unhealthy attitude of some
traders, retailers and farmers who apply chemicals to ripen food products.
The FCCPC boss lamented the harmful practices in food production and
processing, stating that food safety is one of the rights of consumers, and harmful
food practices pose significant health risks and undermine consumer trust in the
food industry. Hear him, “Today, we gather to address some of the pressing issues in our food
industry ripening of fruits, adulterated palm oil, contaminated meat, and grains.
These are issues that affect not only our health and well-being but also the
integrity of our food supply chain. “As we are all aware, food safety is one of your rights as a consumer, and it is
paramount to our collective health. It is disturbing to note the increasing
incidences of harmful practices in food production and processing.
“These practices not only pose significant health risks but also undermine
consumer trust in the food industry”. Abdullahi said that the program would help the commission and consumers
identify and prevent these harmful practices by ensuring commitment to clamp
down on traders involved in these unhealthy food practices.
“We will learn about the dangers of forceful ripening, the risks of consuming
adulterated palm oil, the hazards of contaminated meat, and how to ensure the
quality and safety of grains. “Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge and tools needed to make informed
decisions and advocate for safer food practices in our communities” the FCCPC
boss assured.
