The primate of The African Church, Archbishop Julius Olayinka Osayande
Abbe has called on President Bola Tinubu to make it a point of duty to
address the troubling crises of food, fuel and security in the country. He
made the call at the 5th Biennial and 118th Conference of The African
Church recently held at The African Church Cathedral Salem, Ebute-Metta,
Lagos.
Addressing the conference themed “Who Shall Ascend unto the Hill of the
Lord?”, which objective was to inspire not only spiritual renewal but also
action, the archbishop said it was time that the government took a proactive
step in tackling food, fuel and security challenges facing Nigerians.
The Primate lamented the widespread hunger and insecurity affecting
millions of Nigerians, saying rising food prices and widespread poverty are
the contributing factors to the insecurity that is prevalent in the country.
He said “Nigeria has been facing significant challenges with food security
and hunger, with millions of its population at risk of food compromise.
Factors contributing to this crisis include regional instability, climate
change, inflation, and ongoing conflicts, particularly in northeastern
Nigeria.”
The United Nations estimates that about 25 million Nigerians, roughly 15
per cent of the total population, are food insecure.
