BAYELSA WINS IITA’S SECOND OFFICE IN NIGERIA

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), headquartered in Ibadan, Oyo State, has announced plans to establish a sub-national center in Bayelsa State through a collaborative effort with the state government.

This development was revealed during a meeting between IITA’s Deputy Director-General, Dr. Kenton Dashell, and Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, at IITA’s extensive Ibadan facility.

During his presentation, Dr. Dashell highlighted IITA’s long-standing mission since its establishment in 1967: to generate agricultural innovations that tackle food insecurity and mitigate the impact of climate change on crop production across tropical Africa.

“Nigeria is our home, and after our base in Oyo State, Bayelsa should be our next priority,” Dr. Dashell stated. “We are eager to partner with the Bayelsa State Government to empower young people interested in agriculture and contribute to the state’s development.”

Governor Diri expressed his enthusiasm for IITA’s interest in Bayelsa, assuring them of the state government’s commitment to the partnership. The aim is to establish a center within the state to boost food production and create employment opportunities for its youth.

“My visit today, though impromptu following a political meeting in Oyo State, underscores our keen interest, particularly in youth development and agriculture, as briefed by my Commissioner for Youth Development,” Governor Diri explained.

He acknowledged IITA’s esteemed reputation in Nigeria, concurring that Bayelsa would be a fitting next location. “We need to collaborate to unlock Bayelsa State’s agricultural potential,” he emphasized.

Governor Diri pointed out Bayelsa’s unique maritime nature alongside its fertile lowlands suitable for diverse agricultural practices. He expressed particular interest in the advanced technologies IITA could bring to enhance agricultural production in the state. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of developing the entire agricultural value chain, moving beyond primary produce to utilize byproducts effectively.

“Your technology and comprehensive value chain approach are precisely what Bayelsa needs, and we are eager to partner with you,” Governor Diri affirmed.

He assured IITA of the state’s commitment, stating, “I will direct the Commissioners for Youth Development, Agriculture, Marine and Blue Economy, and other relevant agencies to advance this beyond preliminary discussions. I am confident this collaboration will be mutually beneficial for Bayelsa State and IITA.”
