ANAMBRA GOVERNMENT BACKS LOCAL INITIATIVE TO ENCOURAGE YOUTH INVOLVEMENT IN AGRICULTURE

It is probably the most grassroots organised forum for farmers in the country. And if properly run, the forum will be effective in tackling food insecurity. That must have informed the decision of the Anambra State government to throw its weight behind the Anambra Community Young Farmers Forum (ACYFF). The launching of the forum was designed to empower young farmers with a purpose to boost food production in the state. The initiative is part of the state’s efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and self-sufficiency.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Foster Ihejiofor, while inaugurating the group, praised the youth wing of the Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) for their proactive efforts in creating the platform. He said, “The government is committed to supporting the growth of ACYFF members in agribusiness.”

Ken Okoli, leader of ASATU Youth Wing, emphasised the importance of the initiative. “The platform will form a cooperative for members and collaborate with the Ministry of Agriculture,” he said. So, what is the qualification for membership of the cooperative? He said, “Membership is drawn from one person in each community as a coordinator, with each community having a platform for young farmers.”

Okoli noted that the initiative would help tackle rising food scarcity, increase agricultural output, and explore export opportunities. “We are committed to supporting policies that drive economic growth through sustainable farming,” he said.

The launch of ACYFF is a significant step towards enhancing food production in Anambra State. With the support of the state government and ASATU Youth Wing, young farmers are expected to play a crucial role in achieving the state’s agricultural goals.
