AFRICAN CONFERENCE ON IRRIGATION AND DRAINAGE FORMS PACT ON WATER MANAGEMENT AND REGIONAL COOPERATION

Stakeholders in the agriculture sector in Africa have reached an understanding on the need for a stronger regional cooperation for sustainable food production and water management across the continent. They also agreed on the need for climate-resilient solutions and investment in irrigation infrastructure. The understanding was reached at the 6th African Regional Conference on Irrigation and Drainage, tagged ARCID 2025.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, who was represented by Mr. Moses Jo-Madugu, gave the assurance that Nigeria would keep to the pact. He said the country remained committed to agricultural transformation through sustainable irrigation systems, enhanced water governance, and strong partnerships.

The conference highlighted the central role of youth and women in driving progress in irrigated agriculture. Leading the discussion towards this end was Engr. Oyeronke Oluniyi, Director of Irrigation and Drainage at the Federal Ministry. He noted that young professionals are ready to lead and that women can become catalysts for change in their communities.

Dr. Marco Arcieri, President of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), emphasised the need for greater collaboration and networking to tackle water scarcity and food insecurity. Engr. Razaq Jimoh, a former Managing Director of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, stressed that functional irrigation systems are key to ending poverty through year-round food production.
