GROUP TO DISTRIBUTE 250,000 SMARTPHONES TO FEMALE FARMERS IN NIGERIA

The Nigerian Women for Agricultural Progressive and Development Initiative (NWAPDI) has launched an initiative to distribute 250,000 smartphones with e-healthcare features to female farmers across Nigeria. This move aims to improve their productivity, well-being, and access to vital health services.

According to Omolara Svensson, National Coordinator of NWAPDI, “The smartphones will enhance digital inclusion, providing farmers with access to mobile health applications, precision farming tools, and real-time agricultural information.” This will enable them to make informed decisions, improve farm operations, and increase yields.

Svensson emphasised NWAPDI’s commitment to leveraging technology for agricultural transformation. “We are committed to empowering women in agriculture through technology, financial inclusion, and skill development, ensuring sustainable agricultural growth in Nigeria,” she said.

The organisation has also introduced FarmAssure, an enterprise resource planning system designed to improve farm operations, crop management, and supply chain logistics. Svensson explained that FarmAssure integrates AI, IoT, and blockchain technologies to enhance productivity. Additionally, NWAPDI has launched AgriCert, a blockchain-enabled framework that secures financial transactions between buyers and suppliers, ensuring transparency in agricultural trade.

Through AgriCert, NWAPDI aims to facilitate $20 million in agricultural exports, boosting market access for women farmers. As part of its 2025 agenda, the organisation will roll out FarmAssure to 30% of its members and train 2,000 farmers on its usage.
